As the world eagerly anticipates the upcoming UN Summit of the Future, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, has reaffirmed the nation’s steadfast dedication to multilateralism.

Expressing her enthusiasm on Thursday, Kamboj highlighted India’s proactive stance in embracing the summit as a pivotal opportunity to repurpose the UN for collective global advancement. “Excited for the upcoming UN Summit of the Future! India’s dedication to committed multilateralism shines as we embrace this opportunity to repurpose the UN for collective global progress. Together, we can achieve the greater good,” she posted on X.

India’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism has long been a cornerstone of its foreign policy. The nation has actively engaged in international forums, addressing global challenges and promoting cooperation. This dedication aligns with the core objectives of the Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 2024.

The Summit of the Future is heralded as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance. According to the UN, the summit aims to reaffirm existing commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Charter, and work towards a reinvigorated multilateral system that positively impacts people’s lives.

This high-level event will bring world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on delivering a better present and safeguarding the future. It serves as a moment to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively tackle both current and emerging challenges.

The proposal for the Summit of the Future originated from the UN Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda report, which was a response to a call from Member States for ideas on better addressing present and future challenges. The report emphasized the need for a renewal of trust and solidarity at all levels—between peoples, countries, and generations. It advocated for a fundamental rethink of our political, economic, and social systems to ensure they deliver more fairly and effectively for everyone. The report also recommended a corresponding renewal of the multilateral system, positioning the Summit of the Future as a defining moment to agree on the most critical improvements necessary.

Member States have agreed to hold the Summit in September 2024, with the expected outcome being a Pact for the Future. This pact aims to solidify the commitments and collaborative efforts needed to address the world’s most pressing issues.

As the summit approaches, India’s commitment to multilateralism and its proactive engagement in international cooperation underscore its pivotal role in shaping a better future through collective global efforts.
